Pleural mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. It accounts for almost 75% of all types of malignant mesothelioma.

The cancer of the lining of the lungs called "pleura" is referred as Pleural Mesothelioma. The "pleura" are fibrous sheets that helps to protect lungs, they produce lubricating fluid that allows the lungs that facilitates the smooth movement of lungs as we breathe. Due to the uncommonness of Pleural Mesothelioma, it is many times misdiagnosed as lung cancer. The difference between lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma is, lung cancer is a malignant tumor that originates in the lungs, whereas pleural mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the lungs.

Pleural mesothelioma is of two kinds:

  1. Diffuse and malignant (cancerous)
  2. Localized and benign (non-cancerous)
